Women’s Roles in the Civil War
Harrisburg, Pa. – Noted Civil War historian Juanita Leisch Jensen will
speak on the topic “Women’s Roles in the Civil War” at The National Civil
War Museum on Friday, June 4. A reception will begin at 6:00PM, followed
by dinner and the lecture. Reservations are required for the dinner and
lecture. For information and tickets, telephone 717-260-1861, Extension
1130.
Juanita Leisch Jensen is a nationally recognized authority on women in the
Civil War. She is the guest curator of a current exhibit at the Museum
entitled “Essential to the Cause: Women’s Roles in the Civil War.” Her
book, Who Wore What?: Women’s Wear 1861-1865, is considered to be the
definitive work on women’s clothing during the period.
Like the exhibit, her talk will emphasize the important roles and
activities of women at home, on the farm, and in the communities,
factories, hospitals, offices, and businesses. Women provided medical,
material, monetary, military, social, spiritual and psychological support
for both the North and the South. They provided flags and banners, sewed
uniforms, worked as government clerks and contractors, nursed the wounded,
produced ammunition, cooked food, and even served as spies, smugglers,
scouts and soldiers.
The National Civil War Museum is located in Harrisburg’s Reservoir Park.
The Women’s Exhibit will remain open through Labor Day.
