Thunder on the Hill
Confederate
Artillery Demonstration
Harrisburg, PA (June 1, 2005) -
The
National Civil War Museum will present an encampment of Confederate Civil
War artillery units on Saturday and Sunday, June 4 - 5, 2005.
Loading and firing demonstrations will be conducted each day.
Museum visitors will see the flash, smell the smoke and hear the
roar of Civil War cannons.
The
National Civil War Museum is located in Reservoir Park on the highest hill
in the Harrisburg area. It is
the ideal setting for a gathering of Civil War-era artillery. Confederate living historians portraying Purcell’s Battery,
the “Fauquier Artillery”, and the 4th Maryland Light
Artillery, “The Chesapeake Artillery” will display and fire a variety
of cannons that wreaked havoc on Civil War battlefields.
This
educational program for the entire family is designed to bring history to
life. Living historians will
explain how the guns were used in action and their impact on the
battlefield. The volunteer
artillerymen will also explain the technology of artillery and the safety
practices required in the 1860s.
The
encampment will be open during regular museum hours each day and admission
to the encampment is free. This
program is weather contingent.
The National Civil War Museum,
which has an on-site, full-service café, will be open Friday and Saturday
from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m.
Admission to the Museum is $7.00 for adults, with reduced rates for
children, seniors, military personnel and families. For more information about this unique attraction, please
call 717.260.1861.
