A companion to the newly released A Life In Letters, Joshua L. Chamberlain, the exhibit looks at various milestones in the life of one of Maine’s most accomplished sons.  A graduate of Bowdoin College, who became a professor, a Civil War hero, Governor of Maine, and president of Bowdoin, J.L. Chamberlain’s life is examined through the many letters written to his wife and friends, during his long career of public service. The exhibit is supported by artifacts from Chamberlain’s life including a sampling of his letters, a small baseball bat carved from a tree at Appomattox, the top hat he wore as Governor of Maine, and his commission as Major General of the Maine State Militia.
