Although the Union army occupied an exceptionally strong defensive position and inflicted staggering losses on Confederate forces\, it unexpectedly withdrew—turning what could have been a decisive victory into a strategic retreat. \nIn this engaging presentation\, O’Reilly explores why the battle was fought despite overwhelming odds\, how it shaped the reputations of some of the Civil War’s most prominent commanders\, and why the devastating Confederate assaults haunted Robert E. Lee’s army for the remainder of the war. He is the award-winning author of several books\, including The Fredericksburg Campaign: Winter War on the Rappahannock\, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated work\, and his latest release\, Retreat from Victory: The Battle of Malvern Hill (2026). O’Reilly has appeared in numerous documentaries\, lectured internationally on military history\, and is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading Civil War historians.
